The setting of Maniac Magee is Two Mills. Two Mills is strictly divided by race. The Town was divided by white and black people. East End was considered the black part of town. West end was considered the White part. When Maniac went to the "black" part of town, he wasn't worried about his color. He was just tired of being chased by John Mcnab and his obnoxious friends. He wasn't really even thinking. Maniac walked onto the streets like he was one of them. At first, the people didn't want to accept him but they soon did. The author describes East End as a place where children play outside all the time and adults stay home cook dinner. The author also talks about the "before work hour'," and this is when Maniac took The Beale's dog on a walk, while he was living there. The author talks about how sweet the smell of breakfast was and how pleasant the church was to Maniac's ears. All in all, East End was similar to West End. The only difference was the color of the people's skin.
